Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman’s Alen Hsu Hosts Fort Lauderdale Screening of Award-Winning Film “And Then They Came for Us”

Firm Of Counsel serves as Past President of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida, one of 10 organizations to collaborate on special event

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman, P.L. proudly sponsored a screening of “And Then They Came for Us,” an award-winning film about the parallels between the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and present-day issues minority groups face. Alen Hsu, who is Of Counsel with the Firm, organized the June 12 screening at the Savor Cinema in Fort Lauderdale.

The special event also included a panel discussion, moderated by Hsu, featuring Karen Korematsu, a civil rights advocate and founder of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute – a nonprofit organization advancing human rights through education, as well as the Peabody award-winning director of “And Then They Came for Us,” Abby Ginzberg. The film coincided with the 75th anniversary of the 1942 Executive Order that resulted in the incarceration of more than 120,000 law-abiding Japanese Americans, many of whom were U.S. Citizens.

Hsu is past president of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida, one of 10 bar associations and nonprofits that teamed up to co-host the screening. Special guests included 10 Miami-Dade and Broward judges and representatives from the Florida Bar Board of Governors, Asian American Advisory Board, Chinese Cultural Association of South Florida, Coral Springs Chinese Cultural Association Inc. and Miami Dade College’s Confucius Institute & China Initiatives.

“I am extremely grateful to the law firm for its support of this impactful event,” Hsu said. “I also want to thank B’nai B’rith Justice Unit and the Broward County Bar Association for playing a critical role in organizing and marketing the event. It was incredible to see the turnout from so many members of the legal and broader community. This film does a tremendous job of bringing history into the present.”

Hsu regularly represents publicly traded companies, privately owned multi-national businesses and startup companies with respect to domestic and international legal issues. He provides strategic guidance and legal representation to international investors regarding their investments in the U.S., including the preparation of corporate and commercial contracts. Hsu also maintains an active and diverse litigation practice involving business, labor and employment, non-competition agreements, real estate, construction, landlord-tenant, government relations, products liability, class action defense and bankruptcy and creditors’ rights.
