Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman Attorney Chanae Wood Selected as “The Gator Great 1st – 2019” by University of Florida

Miami, Fla. — Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman announced that attorney Chanae Wood has been honored by the University of Florida’s Association of Black Alumni.   The organization’s Executive Board of the South Florida Chapter selected Wood for recognition as the “Gator Great 1st – 2019,” which is based on nominations from the alumni body.

The Chapter recognizes outstanding African-American Gators in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.  Wood was chosen due to her impressive accomplishments, most notably having served as the First African American Editor-in-Chief of St. Thomas Law School’s Law Review.

In receiving this honor, Wood finds herself in the company of a number of other prominent attorneys including Eugene Pettis, former President of The Florida Bar and co-founder of Haliczer, Pettis & Schwamm, and George Allen, former Broward County Bar Association President and the first African-American to earn a law degree from the University of Florida Law School.

The award identifies and honors graduates who are considered pioneers in various aspects of their professions.

Wood often takes a leadership role in the organizations where she is involved.  She served as the President of the Black Law Students Association during which time it earned the coveted Student Organization of the Year Award.    She continues to maintain an active role in the community, including the Miami Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association.

Wood is an Associate in the firm’s Land Use and Zoning Group.   She earned her JD magna cum laude from St. Thomas University School of Law.  Wood is admitted to the Florida Bar, and has clerked for the Honorable Judge Marcia G. Cooke in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
