JOSEPH H. SEROTA, WEISS SEROTA HELFMAN COLE & BIERMAN FOUNDING MEMBER, WINS DAVID W. DYER AWARD

Prestigious Award for Professionalism Presented by the Dade County Bar Association at Installation Gala on June 23rd

MIAMI — The Dade County Bar Association (DCBA) announced that it has named Joseph H. Serota, founding member of Weiss Serota Helfman Cole & Bierman, as the recipient of the 2018 David W. Dyer Professionalism Award.

The award is presented annually to the lawyer or judge whose conduct most closely reflects and honors the integrity, humility, compassion and professionalism of Judge Dyer.  In 1997, Serota presented the first award of this kind to David Dyer himself.  It is regarded as the most important award presented by the DCBA.

“This is wonderful recognition for Joe who has long been a leader, role model and passionate advocate for justice in the legal community,” said firm managing director Mitch Burnstein.  “I know I speak on behalf of the firm and the thousands of lawyers throughout the county in congratulating him for this well-deserved honor.”

With nearly 40 years of commitment to his community and profession, Serota has always represented his clients with honor and integrity.  He served as the President of the Dade County Bar Association in 1996 and he previously served as a member of the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar.   He has a host of accomplishments including co-chairing the Courthouse lobby restoration project and the historic courtroom restoration project for Courtroom 6-1; successfully spearheading the year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 11th Judicial Circuit; serving on the Judicial Nominations Commission for the Third District Court of Appeal and later as chair of the JNC.

As a testament to his professionalism and ethics, he was appointed by the Superintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools to a task force whose goal was to establish a blue ribbon committee on ethics for the School Board and also served as Chair of the Miami-Dade County Community Relations Board.   He served in many leadership positions with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, including fulfilling the role of General Counsel.

“I am grateful to the DCBA for this recognition, and humbled to stand alongside the revered past winners of this prestigious award,” said Serota.  “It is a particular thrill to receive it more than two decades after presenting the inaugural honor to Judge Dyer, a man of great wisdom and dignity who exemplified to me what this profession means.”
