John Fumero Speaks at the 33rd Annual Environmental Permitting Summer School

MARCO ISLAND, Fla.—JULY, 2019—Nason Yeager shareholder John Fumero was a speaker at the Florida Environmental Network’s annual Environmental Permitting Summer School.  The event is attended by more than 850 attorneys, consultants, engineers, state and local government officials, developers, landowners and others with a strong interest in environmental issues in Florida. The conference was held in Marco Island at the JW Marriott.

Fumero led two presentations during the three day conference. The first discussion focused on emerging issues in environmental resource permitting. This informative and timely course combined the legal principles of ERP permitting, incorporating recent changes in policy and rulemaking, with practical tips for achieving compliance, and avoidance of process “pitfalls” from the viewpoint of both regulators and practitioners. The course also examined what the recent changes and new issues means for ERP applicants.

The second course was about ways to use public-private partnerships to solve Florida’s water challenges. Florida is faced with significant water shortages projected to be an estimated 2 billion gallons per day by 2025 unless proactive action is taken. Florida is also confronting significant water quality challenges, including meeting recently enacted Numeric Nutrient Criteria, TMDLs and restoration targets. Fumero discussed how the private sector help public entities with these issues. He discussed advantages and difficulties in developing public-private partnerships, recent legislative changes at the state and federal level, and success stories in meeting Florida’s future water needs.

Florida Environmental Network, Inc. was created in 1985 and is part of the Florida Chamber Foundation’s ongoing effort to keep its members and other business organizations informed of the numerous environmental and growth management laws and regulations affecting Florida’s citizens and businesses.

John Fumero has nearly 30 years of experience in a wide-ranging practice in the areas of environmental, land use, land development, administrative, zoning, governmental and civil trial law. Fumero, formerly General Counsel of the South Florida Water Management District, represents and provides strategic counsel to landowners, developers, industry, agriculture, utilities and local governments throughout Florida. He represents private and public sector clients before local, state and federal agencies and courts.
