Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County honors Legal Aid’s Walter Honaman, Esq. with its 2018 Father of the Year Recognition

 

 

 

 

 

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – May 30, 2018 – Walter Honaman, Esq. of Legal Aid Service of Broward County (LAS) was named 2018 Father of the Year by the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County at its recent Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon held at the Signature Grand.  Honaman is supervising attorney of the Children’s Advocacy Program at LAS and a statewide leader in the field of children’s advocacy.

 

“I am honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Honaman, who has been married to his wife Sarah for 34 years and has two grown children. “Supporting the area’s at-risk children has been the focus of my entire career, and we couldn’t do it without Legal Aid’s outstanding and passionate team, which represents at-risk children.”

 

He is currently the supervising attorney of the Children’s Advocacy Program of Legal Aid Service of Broward County which encompasses several programs dedicated to at-risk and other youth, giving voice to the express wishes of children, to ensure they receive the rights, entitlements, benefits and services they are entitled to under state and federal law.  Areas of focus include children’s SSI, dependency, delinquency/dependency crossover, permanency and kinship.

He has served two terms on the Juvenile Rules Committee of the Florida Bar, and is currently active on the Cross-Over Committee, the Dependency Court Improvement Committee and the Children and Families Leadership Association. He also serves on the Justice Project Taskforce and the Broward County Dismantling Racism Workshop.

 

Honaman earned his B.A. in anthropology from Franklin and Marshall College, Master’s in Intercultural Human Service Management from the School of International Training, and his J.D. from Nova Southeastern University.

 

What many don’t know about him is that he was born and raised in Tokyo until he was 18 before entering college in the states.
