Michael J. Ryan Honored by The Scottish American Society of South Florida as Honorary Scotsman of the Day

Michael Ryan

Mike Ryan, Mayor of Sunrise and partner at the law firm of Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock Liberman will receive another honor to add to his long list of accolades.   On March 5, 2016, the Scottish American Society of South Florida will name him the 2016 “Honorary Scotsman of the Day” during the annual Scottish Festival and Highland Games.

The day will be filled with Scottish tradition, music, and food.   Highland dancing, pipe bands and athletics are also featured at the 33nd Annual Southeast Florida Scottish Festival & Highland Games, held at Heritage Park in Plantation.

“This honor means so much to me as someone who has travelled extensively throughout Scotland and with family that has direct connections to Scotland,” said Mayor Ryan.  “The Scottish Festival and Highland Games is always great fun, and a source of tremendous pride for the Scottish American population here in South Florida.”

This year, Mayor Ryan’s daughter, Molly, will sing the unofficial Scottish National Anthem, “O’ Flower of Scotland”.  Molly has sang this anthem to open the Festival and Games for the past two years.

Mayor Ryan is no stranger to Scotland.  In 2009, Mayor Ryan rode over 900 miles on his bicycle alongside his brother, a retired U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Middle East and who pushed through the entire distance on a handcrank cycle, to benefit wounded veterans and families of military personnel killed in action.  The ride began at the Land’s End at the southern tip of England and ended at John O’Groats at the Northern point of Scotland in the Scottish Highlands.  “The bike ride across the Scottish border, through Glasgow, Fort William, Inverness, through the Highlands and on to John O’Groats provided some of the most profound images and memorable days of my life,” explained Mayor Ryan.  He has travelled many times to and throughout Scotland, even having the opportunity to meet with Lord Provosts, the equivalent of a Mayor in the United States.

The 2016 Scottish Festival and Highland Games will be held at March 5, 2016 from 9 am to 6 pm at Plantation Heritage Park located at 1100 South Fig Tree Lane, Plantation, Florida.
